Martin Funnell

This collection comprises a series of panoramic negatives and colour transparencies, as well as colour slides and prints. The photographs were taken by Martin Funnell during his National Service with the Royal Engineers in Hong Kong, between April 1954 and August 1955. A newly qualified architect, Funnell was set to work as a draughtsman and spent his leisure time sketching and photographing the sights he encountered in Hong Kong, as well as Macao, Japan and the Philippines.

The images selected here show various views in and around Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and the New Territories. They were taken by Funnell using his panoramic camera which he made himself from cardboard, balsa cement and a recycled medium format camera lens.
