Nigel Spry

This collection comprises colour slides, photographic prints and negatives, as well as books, personal documents, and archaeological reports created and collected by Nigel Spry during his time living and working in Hong Kong in the 1980s. Resident in Hong Kong for two periods (1981-84 and 1986-1989) while working as an engineer, Spry was also an amateur archaeologist and active member of the Hong Kong Archaeological Society. The majority of the over 2,500 colour slides in the collection depict the cultural heritage of Hong Kong, and provide a fairly comprehensive photographic survey of important cultural events such as festivals and religious ceremonies, as well as everyday life for people in many varied locations in Hong Kong and the New Territories.

The images selected here depict Tin Hau and Lunar New Year festivals, road and sea transport, as well ancestral halls and villages in the New Territories. The selection also includes 16 Longevity commercial slides, dating from the 1960s, collected by Spry.
