This collection comprises 13 black and white photographs taken in China and Hong Kong. They appear to have been removed from a photograph album. The photographs were taken by Shao Mai, or her relatives, in the 1940s and 1950s. Shao Mai (nee Yam) was born in Canton, China and moved with her family to Hong Kong as a child. She attended university in Taiwan before emigrating to the US in the early 1960s where she married her husband Chao Mai. Like her, Chao Mai was born in Canton and had emigrated to the US via Taiwan.
The images selected here show celebrations held in Hong Kong to commemorate the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953.
